AgriSearch, AFBI and CAFRE are organising a series of GrassCheck farm walks to be held on GrassCheck dairy and beef farms in August.

Recent results from the GrassCheck project have highlighted the variability in grass growth and quality both in terms of year to year and field to field.  These seasonal and field variations will be explored and will illustrate how regular measurement of grass has allowed our pilot farmers to be pro-active.

Given the poor summer growth (particularly in the eastern counties) it will be important that farmers maximise growth and utilisation of grass in the autumn.  The walks will examine what is achievable from grass in the autumn and discuss how to plan nutrient applications and grazing management to achieve this.

Even with optimal autumn grass management it is likely that many farms will still be short on winter fodder.  The farm walks will provide guidelines on carrying out a fodder budget to assess stocks relative to demand and look at options for bridging any gaps between supply and demand.

In the interests of biosecurity those attending are asked to wear clean clothing not previously worn while in direct contact with their own animals. Outdoor work boots should not be worn. Protective overalls and footwear will be provided.
